Connecting Everest Base Camp and Gokyo
Cho La (5,420m) is the most famous and difficult of the Three Passes. It involves crossing a glacier and a steep rock scramble. It connects the two main Everest trekking valleys.
You must walk across the Cho La glacier. It is often slippery. Micro-spikes are essential. In bad weather, navigation is difficult. It adds a touch of mountaineering to your Everest expedition.
The climb up from the Dzongla side involves loose rock. Helmets are not standard but recommended due to falling stones. It is physically exhausting but thrilling.
Reaching the top feels like a summit. You can see Ama Dablam and Cholatse close up. The descent into the Gokyo valley opens up a whole new landscape for your Everest trekking adventure.
Do not attempt Cho La in heavy snow without a guide. It is a serious mountain pass.
