Understanding the Price of the Summit
Climbing to the Mount Everest summit is one of the most expensive adventures on Earth. Prices range from $35,000 to over $100,000. Where does all that money go?
The Nepali government charges $11,000 per climber just for the permit. This royalty fee is the base cost before you even buy a single piece of gear for your Everest expedition.
This is the biggest chunk. It covers oxygen bottles ($500+ each), high-altitude tents, food for weeks, and most importantly, the wages and insurance for the Sherpa team who fix ropes and carry loads.
Western-guided expeditions cost more because you are paying for IFMGA certified guides. Budget operators use local guides. The difference often comes down to safety margins and comfort at Everest Base Camp.
Cutting costs on oxygen or support staff increases risk. When bidding for the Everest summit, safety should be the priority over savings.
