Using Acetazolamide on Your Everest Expedition
Acetazolamide (Diamox) is the most common drug used to prevent altitude sickness. It forces your body to breathe faster, oxygenating the blood. Is it right for your Everest trekking adventure?
Diamox aids acclimatization; it does not cure serious AMS. Many trekkers take a low dose (125mg) starting from Namche as a preventative measure. It helps you sleep better at Everest Base Camp.
The most common side effect is tingling fingers and toes. It is harmless but annoying. It is also a diuretic, so you will pee more. Stay hydrated! This is a standard part of life on a Mount Everest expedition.
It is a sulfa drug. If you are allergic to sulfa, you cannot take it. Always talk to your doctor before the trip. Carry it in your first aid kit even if you don't plan to use it.
Diamox isn't cheating; it's a tool to help your body adjust. Use it wisely.
