Navigating Bureaucracy for Everest Base Camp
The Khumbu region is modernizing. The old paper TIMS card is being replaced by digital systems and local trek cards. Knowing what you need ensures a smooth start to your Mount Everest expedition.
This is the most important permit. It is issued by the local government and costs NPR 2,000. Unlike other permits, you usually buy this in Lukla or Monjo, not Kathmandu.
This permit helps fund conservation and waste management. You can buy it at the park gate in Monjo. Keep the receipt safe; you will need to show it at Namche Bazaar to continue your Everest trekking route.
For the Everest region specifically, the central TIMS card is often not required, having been replaced by the local permit. However, rules change. Always check with your agency before leaving for your Everest expedition.
Permit checkpoints are frequent. Keep your documents in a waterproof pocket in your daypack for easy access.
