Preparing for the Final Push to Everest Base Camp
Dingboche (4,410m) is a critical stop on the Everest trekking route. It is the last permanent settlement where crops are grown. Stopping here is vital to avoid altitude sickness before Base Camp.
The standard acclimatization hike is up Nangkartshang Peak (5,083m). It is a tough climb but offers close-up views of Makalu and Ama Dablam. Reaching 5,000m here prepares you for the Mount Everest expedition base camp.
Dingboche is windy and cold. The stone walls around the fields protect the barley crops. Bring your warm layers for the evening. It’s a good test for your gear before the Everest summit approach.
Surprisingly, Dingboche has cafes showing movies about Everest (like 'Into Thin Air'). It’s a great way to relax and get inspired for the final days of your trek.
Many try to rush past Dingboche and get sick. Take the day. Your body needs it to reach the Everest Base Camp safely.
