Electronics and Charging on the Everest Base Camp Trek

Keeping Your Camera Alive for the Mount Everest Summit Shot

Power at High Altitude

In the cold of the Himalayas, batteries drain fast. Keeping your phone and camera charged is a major logistical challenge during Everest trekking. Here is how to manage power on your expedition.

Teahouse Charging

Most teahouses offer charging for a fee (approx $3-$5 per device). In lower elevations, plugs are in rooms. Higher up, like Gorakshep, there is a communal charging strip in the dining hall. It gets expensive on a long Everest expedition.

Power Banks

Bring a high-capacity power bank (20,000mAh or more). This is your lifeline. Keep it warm inside your sleeping bag at night. Cold kills lithium batteries instantly, ruining your chance to photograph the Everest summit.

Solar Panels

Small solar panels can be strapped to your backpack. They are effective on sunny days for topping up power banks. They provide free energy during the long walk to Everest Base Camp.

Disconnect to Connect

While keeping safety devices charged is vital, try to limit screen time to save battery and enjoy the view.
