Hydration Strategies for Your Expedition
You need 4 liters a day to combat altitude. But tap water in Nepal is unsafe. Here is how to stay hydrated without getting sick on your Everest trekking journey.
Hard plastic bottles (Nalgene) are best. They can take boiling water (turning them into hot water bottles for your sleeping bag). They don't freeze as easily as bladders on the Mount Everest expedition trail.
Chlorine dioxide tablets are the gold standard. They kill viruses and bacteria. Filters are good but can crack in freezing cold. Boiled water from the lodge is the safest but most expensive option for Everest trekking.
Treated water tastes like a swimming pool. Bring Tang or electrolyte powder. If you like the taste, you will drink more. Hydration is the #1 medicine for altitude on your Mount Everest summit approach.
If your urine is clear, you are winning. If it's yellow, drink more. It's that simple.
