Comparing the Two Most Popular Bucket List Treks
If you are looking for a big adventure, it usually comes down to these two. Trekking to Everest Base Camp or climbing Kilimanjaro? Both lead to thin air, but the Mount Everest expedition vibe is totally different.
Kilimanjaro is a rapid ascent (5-8 days) to 5,895m. It is a sprint. EBC is a marathon (12+ days) to 5,364m. EBC allows for better acclimatization, while Kili is a shock to the system. Everest trekking is physically easier day-to-day but longer.
On Kili, you stand on the summit of a continent. On EBC, you stand at the base of the Mount Everest summit. If you need to 'top out', pick Kili. If you want to be surrounded by giants, pick Everest.
Kilimanjaro is a nature trek through distinct zones. EBC is a cultural journey through Sherpa villages. You sleep in beds on Everest; you sleep in tents on Kili. The Everest expedition offers more cultural immersion.
They are different beasts. Start with EBC for the culture and duration, then tackle Kili for the altitude test.
