The Descent from Everest: Why It's Harder Than You Think

Managing the Return Leg of Your Expedition

The forgotten Half

Reaching Everest Base Camp is only halfway. The walk back to Lukla takes 3-4 days and can be surprisingly tough. Many accidents happen on the descent due to fatigue and loss of focus.

Joint Impact

Walking downhill puts immense strain on knees and ankles. Trekking poles are essential to reduce impact. The adrenaline of the goal is gone, making the miles feel longer on your Everest trekking return.

The 'Pheriche Cough'

The dry, cold air often causes the 'Khumbu Cough'. As you descend into thicker air, your lungs recover, but the dust on the trail can irritate your throat. Wear a buff/mask.

Celebration Mode

It’s tempting to start celebrating with beer in Namche, but you still have a long walk to Lukla. Save the big party for the end. Stay hydrated and focused until the flight out.

Finish Strong

The descent offers a chance to reflect on your achievement. Enjoy the oxygen returning to your blood and the warmer temperatures.
