Running from Base Camp to Namche
Every May 29th, runners gather at Everest Base Camp for the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon. It starts at 5,364m and ends at 3,440m. It sounds like it's all downhill, but the altitude makes it the hardest marathon on Earth.
Runners follow the standard Everest trekking trail. They navigate rocks, yaks, and suspension bridges. There are two steep uphill sections that crush the lungs of even elite athletes.
You cannot just fly in and run. Participants must trek to Base Camp slowly over 12 days to acclimatize. The trek in is part of the race preparation for this unique Mount Everest expedition event.
The camaraderie is incredible. Running in the shadow of the Mount Everest summit celebrates the spirit of human endurance. Finishers earn serious bragging rights.
If hiking isn't hard enough for you, try running. It is the ultimate test of fitness.
