Gear Care: Maintenance on the Mount Everest Expedition

Keeping Your Kit Functional at High Altitude

Maintenance is Survival

In the harsh environment of the Mount Everest summit, your gear is your life support. Neglecting your kit during an Everest trekking adventure can lead to equipment failure when you need it most.

Zippers and Ice

Zippers often freeze or get jammed with grit. Using a bit of wax or lubricant keeps your down suit and tent functional. A broken zipper at Camp 4 is a disaster for any Mount Everest expedition.

Cleaning Gear in a Tent
Crampon Sharpening

Walking on rock dulls your crampons. Carrying a small file to sharpen your points at Everest Base Camp ensures you have maximum grip on the blue ice of the Lhotse Face.

Boot Drying

Never leave wet boots outside. They will freeze into ice blocks. Keep your inner liners inside your sleeping bag to ensure they are dry and warm for the next day of Everest trekking.

Be Proactive

Spend 20 minutes every evening checking your gear. It’s the best way to ensure your Mount Everest expedition ends in success.
