Fastpacking the Khumbu
Some athletes are ditching the heavy boots for trail runners and moving fast. 'Fastpacking' allows you to cover the Everest Base Camp route in half the time.
You carry a 20L pack with only essentials. You run the flats and downhills, and hike the uphills. It requires high fitness and ultralight gear.
Moving fast is dangerous for altitude sickness. Even runners must stick to the sleeping elevation rules. You might get to camp early, but you still have to wait to ascend safely on your Everest expedition.
It feels freeing. You are not burdened by a heavy load. You flow through the landscape. It is a thrilling way to experience the Mount Everest summit region.
Don't try this as your first trek. Know your body and the mountains first.
