Education and Tradition in the Shadow of the Mount Everest summit
Along the Everest trekking trails, you will find schools where young Sherpa boys train to become monks. These institutions are the cultural heartbeat of the Mount Everest expedition region, preserving ancient knowledge.
Students learn Tibetan scriptures, meditation, and philosophy. This spiritual education is what gives the Sherpa guides their legendary patience and calm during a Mount Everest summit attempt.
Many of these schools rely on donations from Everest trekking groups. Your visit helps provide food and books for the students who will one day perform the Puja for future Mount Everest expeditions.
The school at Tengboche is a major center for learning. Witnessing the students debating in the courtyard is a cultural highlight for trekkers on their way to Everest Base Camp.
The Mount Everest summit is a monument to physical strength, but the monastery schools are a monument to the strength of the Sherpa spirit. Support them during your expedition.
