The Jiri and Phaplu Routes to Everest Base Camp
The flight to Lukla is famous for being thrilling, but also weather-dependent. For those scared of flying or wanting a longer adventure, trekking from Jiri or Phaplu is the historic way to start a Mount Everest expedition.
Edmund Hillary walked from Jiri. This route adds 5-7 days to your Everest trekking itinerary. It passes through lush middle hills and Sherpa villages that see few tourists compared to the main EBC trail.
Walking from a lower altitude allows for gradual acclimatization. By the time you reach Namche Bazaar, you are far stronger than those who flew in. This is the best preparation for high altitude on an Everest expedition.
You can now take a jeep to Phaplu or even Tham Danda, cutting the extra walking days down. It’s a bumpy ride but guarantees you won't be stuck in Kathmandu waiting for flights to clear for your Everest Base Camp trek.
If you have time, the overland route provides a richer cultural experience and a safer start to your Everest journey.
