The Six Lakes of Gokyo: A Complete Guide

Exploring the Turquoise Waters of the Khumbu

More Than Just One Lake

Most trekkers visit the third lake (Gokyo Cho) and turn back. But the Gokyo valley holds six main lakes. Exploring the upper lakes offers solitude and views of the Mount Everest summit that few see.

Lake 1, 2, and 3

You pass Longpongo (1st) and Taboche Tsho (2nd) on the way to the village at the 3rd lake. These are beautiful, but the adventure lies further north on your Everest trekking alternative route.

Gokyo Third Lake
Lake 4 and 5 (Thonak and Ngozumpa)

A day hike north takes you to the 4th and 5th lakes. The view from the 5th lake (Ngozumpa Tsho) offers a jagged panorama of Cho Oyu and the Everest summit face. It is the best spot in the valley.

The 6th Lake

At the foot of Cho Oyu, the 6th lake is remote and requires a long day. Only dedicated trekkers make it here. It feels like the end of the world, far from the busy Everest Base Camp trail.

Go Further

If you have an extra day in Gokyo, hike north. The silence and scenery are unmatched.
