Hyolmo Culture Just North of Kathmandu
The Helambu region is located just north of the Kathmandu Valley. Despite its proximity, it remains unspoiled. It is famous for its sweet apples, artistic monasteries, and the Hyolmo people.
The trek starts from Sundarijal, just an hour's drive from Kathmandu. It is a low-altitude trek (staying mostly below 3,000m), making it perfect for winter trekking or for those who worry about altitude sickness.
The region is home to the Hyolmo people, who have a distinct language and culture. Their villages are clean, and their monasteries are beautifully decorated. It offers a softer, greener landscape compared to the rugged high Himalayas.
The trek can be completed in 5-8 days. You can do a loop finishing in Melamchi, or connect it with the Langtang Valley trek via the Gosaikunda lakes for a longer adventure.
For a quick, low-stress, and culturally rich getaway from Kathmandu, Helambu is the ideal choice.
