Crossing the Dudh Koshi on the Way to Namche
It is the most famous bridge in the Himalayas. Hanging 125m above the river, the Hillary Suspension Bridge is the gateway to Namche Bazaar. Crossing it is a rite of passage for every Everest trekking group.
The bridge sways in the wind. Prayer flags flutter violently. Looking down at the roaring river is terrifying for some. Focus on the end of the bridge, not the water.
You often share the bridge with yak trains. Always wait for them to cross first, or stick to the side. Getting pushed by a yak on a swinging bridge is not how you want to start your Mount Everest expedition.
You can see the old, lower bridge beneath it. It’s a great spot for photos. It marks the start of the steep climb to Namche, the first real test of your fitness.
Crossing this bridge symbolizes leaving the lowlands and entering the high mountains.
