Pro Tips for Mountain Photography
You traveled halfway around the world. You want the perfect shot of the Mount Everest summit. Here is how to get it, dealing with the harsh light and scale of the Himalayas.
Everest is huge, but without context, it looks like a hill. Put a person, a tent, or prayer flags in the foreground. This shows the immense scale of the Everest expedition landscape.
Midday sun washes out the snow. Shoot at sunrise or sunset. The alpenglow turns the summit pink and orange. This is when the texture of the rock and ice pops in Everest trekking photos.
Use a telephoto lens to compress the distance and make the peaks loom large. Wide angles are great for valleys, but they shrink the mountains. Zoom in on the summit plume.
Keep batteries warm and lenses dry. The environment is harsh, but the images are worth it.
