Following in the Footsteps of Hillary's Mount Everest Expedition
Before the airport at Lukla was built, all Mount Everest expeditions walked from Jiri. This 'classic route' adds days to the Everest Base Camp trek but offers a deeper connection to history.
The first week takes you through the Solu region. It is lush and green. You pass through villages before reaching the Sherpa highlands of the main Everest trekking trail.
By walking from low altitude, your body adapts naturally. Trekkers on this route rarely suffer from altitude sickness when they reach the high Khumbu or attempt the Everest summit view points.
Since most trekkers fly to Lukla, the Jiri trail is peaceful. You will enjoy genuine interactions with locals, a stark contrast to the busy main Everest expedition route.
If you have the time, the Jiri route is the complete package: culture, nature, and the historic path of the first successful Mount Everest summit teams.
