The Khumbu Cough: Prevention and Treatment

Avoiding the Famous High-Altitude Hack

The Dry Air Enemy

Almost every climber on a Mount Everest expedition gets it. The 'Khumbu Cough' is a dry, hacking cough caused by cold, arid air. It can be severe enough to break ribs or end a summit attempt. Here is how to stop it.

Wear a Buff

The simple solution is to cover your mouth. A Buff or face mask traps moisture from your breath, humidifying the air before it hits your lungs. Wear it even when sleeping at Everest Base Camp.

Stay Hydrated

Dry throats are more susceptible to irritation. Drinking warm fluids constantly helps soothe the throat. Avoid breathing through your mouth while hiking on the Everest trekking trail.

Lozenges

Pack plenty of throat lozenges. They stimulate saliva and coat the throat. They are a small item that makes a huge difference in comfort on the way to the Everest summit view.

Cover Up

Don't let a cough ruin your trek. Cover your mouth from day one.
