Managing Joint Pain on the Trek Down
Going up taxes the lungs; coming down taxes the knees. The trek back from Everest Base Camp is punishing. Here is how to protect your joints.
We said it before, we say it again. Lengthen your poles for the downhill. Lean on them. Transfer weight from legs to arms. It is the only way to survive the descent from Namche.
Don't take big leaps. Take small, controlled steps. Keep your knees bent. This reduces the impact force on the joint. Walk like a Sherpa on your Everest expedition.
Wear a compression knee brace if you have history. Take anti-inflammatories at night to reduce swelling. Ice your knees with snow if available (but protect the skin!).
Most accidents happen on the descent. Don't rush. Protect your knees for the next adventure.
