A Beautiful and Accessible Trek Near Kathmandu
The Langtang Valley is known as the 'Valley of Glaciers'. It is the closest major trekking region to Kathmandu but remains surprisingly uncrowded. The region has bounced back incredibly well from the 2015 earthquake, with new teahouses and trails welcoming trekkers.
The trail follows the Langtang Khola river upstream through dense bamboo and rhododendron forests—home to the elusive Red Panda. You eventually reach the alpine valley at Langtang Village and continue to Kyanjin Gompa, surrounded by snowy peaks.
From Kyanjin Gompa, trekkers can climb Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) or Tserko Ri (4,984m) for panoramic views of Langtang Lirung and the glaciers. These viewpoints offer some of the best mountain vistas relative to the effort required to reach them.
The valley is inhabited by the Tamang people, whose culture, dress, and language are closely linked to Tibet. The hospitality in Langtang is renowned, and staying in local teahouses directly supports the local economy's ongoing growth.
For a 7-9 day trek that offers everything—forests, glaciers, culture, and high peaks—without a flight to Lukla or a long drive to Manapul, Langtang is the perfect choice.
