Money on the Trail: ATMs and Cash in Everest

How to Pay for Your Tea and Pie

Cash is King

Credit cards are rarely accepted on the Everest trekking trail, and when they are, fees are high. Managing your cash flow is critical. You don't want to run out of money at Everest Base Camp.

ATMs in the Mountains

There are ATMs in Lukla and Namche Bazaar. However, they are frequently out of cash or broken. Do not rely on them. Treat them as a backup, not your primary source for your Everest expedition funding.

Nepali Rupees Cash
Currency Exchange

Exchange your USD or Euros in Kathmandu. You get a better rate. On the trail, exchange rates are terrible. Carry Nepali Rupees (NPR) in small denominations (100s and 500s) for easier transactions.

Daily Budget

Budget approx $30-$50 per day for food and extras (charging, showers). Prices rise with altitude. A bottle of water costs $1 in Lukla and $4 in Gorakshep. Plan accordingly for your Everest trekking duration.

Bring a Stash

Carry more than you think you need. Cash weighs little but solves many problems.
