What to Expect During Your Everest Base Camp Trek
Teahouse trekking is unique to Nepal. It allows you to hike for weeks without carrying camping gear, a huge advantage for Everest trekking. But what exactly is a teahouse? They range from basic stone huts to lodges with attached bathrooms.
Standard rooms are twin-share with plywood walls and foam mattresses. They are unheated, so a good sleeping bag is essential for any Everest Base Camp trek. In lower elevations, luxury lodges are available, but higher up near the Everest summit approach, facilities remain basic.
The heart of the teahouse is the dining hall, heated by a yak-dung stove. This is where everyone gathers to eat, swap stories about their Mount Everest expedition plans, and recharge. Charging electronics usually costs a small fee here.
Western-style flush toilets are becoming common in lower elevations, but squat toilets are the norm higher up the Everest trekking trails. 'Hot showers' are often gas-heated or solar-powered.
Teahouse life is about simplicity and community. Don't expect 5-star amenities on your Everest trekking adventure, but do expect 5-star hospitality and views right out your window.
