Speaking with Locals on the Expedition Trail
You don't need to be fluent, but knowing a few words of Nepali (or Sherpa) builds instant rapport. It turns a transaction into a relationship on your Everest trekking journey.
'Namaste' (Hello/Respect) is universal. 'Tashi Delek' is the specific Sherpa greeting used in the Khumbu. Use Tashi Delek when passing locals on the trail to Everest Base Camp for a warm smile in return.
'Dhanyabaad' means Thank You. 'Mitho Cha' means 'It is delicious'—use this when eating Dal Bhat. Your cook will appreciate it immensely during your Mount Everest expedition.
'Jam Jam' means 'Let's go'. You will hear your guide say this often. 'Bistari' means 'slowly'. If you are out of breath on a hill, tell your guide 'Bistari, bistari'.
A little effort goes a long way. Speaking the language shows respect for the culture hosting your adventure.
