Supporting the Strongest People on the Mountain
Porters carry 30kg+ loads to fuel the Everest trekking industry. Ensuring they are treated fairly is the responsibility of every trekker. Ethical decisions make for a better Mount Everest expedition environment.
The legal limit is 30kg, but many are forced to carry more. Pack light (max 15kg in your duffel) so your porter isn't overloaded. If you see a porter struggling, speak to your guide.
Ensure your agency provides proper jackets and shoes for porters. Seeing porters in sandals on the snow near Everest Base Camp is a sign of an unethical operator.
Accidents happen. Verify that your trekking company insures their porters for helicopter rescue. They deserve the same safety net as the clients on a Mount Everest expedition.
Treat porters with dignity. They are the engine of the Himalayas.
