Connecting Thame and Gokyo
Of the Three Passes, Renjo La (5,360m) is often voted the most beautiful. Looking back over the Gokyo lakes with the Mount Everest summit in the background creates a picture-perfect postcard.
It’s a steep 3-4 hour climb from Gokyo. As you rise, the lakes look like turquoise drops in the grey landscape. The Everest summit rises slowly above the Nuptse wall.
You see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Unlike Cho La, there is no glacier crossing, making it a safer option for Everest trekking groups wanting high views without technical gear.
The west side descends into the quiet Thame valley, an ancient trade route. It is wild and rugged. You rarely see other trekkers here, offering a wilderness feel to your Mount Everest expedition.
Crossing Renjo La turns the Gokyo trek into a loop, avoiding backtracking. It is highly recommended.
