Why Are So Many Sherpas Named Pasang?

Understanding Sherpa Naming Customs

Days of the Week

You will meet many Lakpas, Pembas, and Dawas on your Everest trekking trip. Sherpas are traditionally named after the day of the week they were born. It connects them to the cycle of time.

The Seven Names

Dawa (Mon), Mingma (Tue), Lhakpa (Wed), Phurba (Thu), Pasang (Fri), Pemba (Sat), Nima (Sun). If your guide is named Pasang, he was likely born on a Friday. This tradition is ubiquitous in the Mount Everest expedition community.

Religious Names

Many also have religious middle names like Tenzing (Holder of Teachings) or Dorje (Thunderbolt). These names are given by lamas (monks) and carry spiritual significance for their journey, including on the Everest summit.

No Surnames?

Traditionally, 'Sherpa' is the clan name/surname for everyone. This is why record lists for the Mount Everest summit are full of 'Rita Sherpa' or 'Kami Rita Sherpa'.

Cultural Connection

Knowing this simple fact helps you remember names and start conversations with the local staff.
