Beyond the Summit: The Hillary Legacy

Schools and Hospitals in the Everest Region

Giving Back

Sir Edmund Hillary is famous for the Mount Everest summit, but his greatest achievement was his humanitarian work. The Himalayan Trust has built schools, hospitals, and bridges that transformed the Khumbu.

Khumjung School

Hillary founded the first school in Khumjung in 1961. Today, it educates hundreds of Sherpa children. You can visit the school on your acclimatization hike from Namche. It is a heartwarming stop on any Everest trekking tour.

Kundé Hospital

This hospital provides vital medical care to locals and trekkers. Before this, simple infections could be fatal. It is the medical safety net for the region, supporting the Everest expedition industry.

The Airport

Hillary helped build the airport at Lukla. While terrifying to some, it brought prosperity to the region by enabling tourism. His legacy is woven into every aspect of Everest trekking.

A True Hero

Hillary said, 'It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.' His life proved that kindness is stronger than any peak.
