The Stray Dogs of Everest: Friends or Foes?

Dealing with Animals on the Trekking Route

Furry Companions

You will see many dogs on the Everest trekking trail. Some are friendly mascots that follow trekkers for days; others guard yaks. Knowing how to interact ensures safety on your Mount Everest expedition.

The 'Guide' Dogs

It is common for a dog to join a trekking group and walk with them from Lukla to Namche. They are looking for food and companionship. They are usually harmless and add joy to the Everest Base Camp journey.

Mountain Dog Sleeping
Rabies Risk

However, rabies exists in Nepal. Do not pet unknown dogs, no matter how cute. If bitten, you must evacuate immediately for vaccines. It ends your Mount Everest summit dream instantly.

Night Barking

The biggest annoyance is noise. Village dogs sleep all day and bark all night. Earplugs are an essential piece of gear for sleeping in teahouses on your Everest expedition.

Look but Don't Touch

Enjoy their company from a distance. Let them lead the way, but keep your hands to yourself.
