A Somber Moment on the Mount Everest Expedition Route
Just before Lobuche lies the Thukla Pass (4,830m). At the top sits a collection of stone chortens—memorials to climbers who died on Mount Everest expeditions. It is the most emotional part of the trek.
You will find memorials for legends like Scott Fischer and Rob Hall (from the 1996 disaster). It is a stark reminder of the dangers of the Mount Everest summit.
The climb up to the pass is steep and breathless. Arriving at the memorials forces you to stop and catch your breath, both physically and emotionally. It is a rite of passage for every Everest trekking group.
Walk through quietly. Prayer flags flutter in the wind. It connects you to the history and the human cost of conquering the highest point on Earth.
Leaving the pass, you enter the glacial moraine, carrying the memory of those who came before you.
