The Toilet Situation on the Everest Base Camp Trek

What to Expect: Squats, Westerns, and the Wild

The Not-So-Glamorous Side

It’s the question everyone asks but is afraid to. Toilet facilities on an Everest trekking trip range from modern to medieval. Being prepared helps avoid culture shock.

Lower Altitudes

In Lukla and Namche, many lodges have Western flush toilets. Enjoy them while you can. As you ascend your Everest expedition route, plumbing becomes difficult due to freezing pipes.

Teahouse Bathroom
Squat Toilets

Higher up, squat toilets are the norm. They are more hygienic but require strong thighs! Bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer—these are rarely provided.

The 'Long Drop'

In very basic places or on the trail, you might face a simple hole in the ground. At Everest Base Camp itself, expedition teams use tented toilets with barrels that are carried out.

Hygiene is Health

Wash your hands thoroughly. Most sickness comes from poor hygiene, not the food. A clean trekker is a healthy trekker.
