New Flight Rules for Everest Trekking
In peak season, flights to Lukla no longer depart from Kathmandu. They leave from Ramechhap (Manthali). This adds a logistical hurdle to your Mount Everest expedition start.
Kathmandu airport is too busy. Diverting trekkers to Ramechhap reduces delays. It actually makes getting to Everest Base Camp more reliable, even if it is inconvenient.
You must drive 4-5 hours from Kathmandu to Ramechhap. Most trekkers leave at 2 AM to catch the first flight. It is a grueling start to your Everest trekking vacation.
Facilities in Ramechhap are basic. Be prepared for a rough breakfast. But once you are in the air, the excitement of the Mount Everest summit approach takes over.
Accept the detour as part of the adventure. It’s the price of entry for the Khumbu.
