Cleaning Up the Roof of the World: Waste on Everest

Sustainable Solutions for Mount Everest Expeditions

The Trash Problem

Decades of expeditions left a legacy of trash on the Mount Everest summit slopes. But things are changing. New initiatives are turning Everest trekking into a force for cleaning up the mountains.

Carry Me Back

The 'Carry Me Back' initiative asks trekkers to carry a 1kg bag of trash from Namche back to Lukla. It’s a simple way to contribute. Thousands of kilos are removed this way every season by Everest trekking volunteers.

Human Waste Solutions

Human waste at Base Camp is now collected in barrels and carried down to lower elevations for proper treatment. On the high camps of a Mount Everest expedition, climbers are now required to use 'poop bags' and bring them down.

Sagarmatha Next

A new center near Namche turns waste into art and souvenirs. Visiting this center shows the creative solutions being used to manage the debris of the Mount Everest summit rush.
