Animals You Might See on Your Everest Trek

Life at High Altitude

The Everest region isn't just rock and ice. Sagarmatha National Park is home to rare species adapted to the harsh environment. Keep your eyes open on your Mount Everest expedition approach.

Himalayan Tahr

These wild goats are often seen on the cliffs around Namche Bazaar. They have thick reddish-brown coats and are surprisingly agile. They are the most common large mammal spotted during Everest trekking.

The Danphe (Impeyan Pheasant)

Nepal's national bird. With its iridescent rainbow plumage, it looks like a peacock of the snows. They are often seen in the forests near Tengboche.

Snow Leopard

The 'Ghost of the Mountains'. While extremely rare and elusive, they do inhabit the park. Seeing one is a once-in-a-lifetime event. You are more likely to see their prey or footprints.

Look Up and Down

From soaring eagles to musk deer in the bushes, the biodiversity of Everest adds another layer of wonder to the trek.
