The Everest Base Camp trek is a renowned adventure that combines two iconic destinations in the Everest region of Nepal. It involves trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest and exploring the stunning Gokyo Lakes.
Typically, the trek takes around 14 to 16 days, depending on the specific itinerary and acclimatization needs. This duration includes trekking days, rest days, and travel to and from Kathmandu.
The best time to embark on the Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes trek is during the pre-monsoon (spring) season from March to May and the post-monsoon (autumn) season from September to November. These months offer stable weather conditions and clear mountain views.
While previous trekking experience is beneficial, the Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes trek is suitable for adventurers of various skill levels. It is essential to be physically fit and prepared for moderate to strenuous hiking at high altitudes.
The highest point reached during the trek is the Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 meters (17,598 feet) above sea level. Additionally, trekkers ascend to the Gokyo Ri viewpoint at about 5,357 meters (17,575 feet).
Adequate physical fitness training, including cardiovascular exercises and strength training, is crucial. It is also essential to acclimatize gradually, stay hydrated, and follow the guidance of experienced guides. Consult with a healthcare professional before the trek, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions.
Accommodation along the Everest Base Camp route primarily consists of tea houses or lodges. These basic guesthouses offer simple rooms with twin beds and shared restroom facilities. Trekkers should be prepared for rustic conditions and bring a sleeping bag for added comfort.

Trekkers need two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. These permits can be obtained through registered trekking agencies in Kathmandu or upon arrival in Lukla, the starting point of the trek.
Altitude sickness, or acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a potential risk when trekking at high altitudes. Trekkers should acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and be aware of symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and fatigue. Guides are trained to monitor trekkers' health and provide assistance if needed.
Essential items include appropriate trekking attire, sturdy hiking boots, a warm sleeping bag, sunscreen, sunglasses, a first aid kit, and a refillable water bottle. It is also advisable to bring altitude sickness medication, trekking poles, and snacks for energy during the trek.
Kathmandu is a pretty good place to shop and prices are very reasonable. You can pick up pretty much any trekking equipment you will need however we do suggest you get your hiking boots before you arrive and make sure they fit well. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind.
- We’ll give you a duffel bag when you arrive in Nepal to repack your gear into, and the porters will carry that.
- You should bring a small day pack that you will carry during the day with essentials like water, camera, sunscreen, extra layers, etc.
- You can store any extra luggage in the hotel.
- Total luggage allotment for the Lukla flight is 10Kg / 22lbs for luggage and additional 5Kg / 11lbs for carry on.
- We offer rental sleeping bags for $20 and down jackets for $15
